Nix Olympica Cyane

Made with Bryce

The largest vulcano in our Solar System is Nix Olympica or Olympus Mons on Mars with a base of 200 km (125 mi) and a height of 26 km (16 mi). Created from 450 m (160 ft) / px DEMs (2 GB to download). We look in south-eastern direction over the Amazonis plain and see the volcano in 400 km (250 mi) distance, to the left part of the formation Cyane is visible. On the sky, the constellation of Taurus (The Bull), higher up and a bit to the right the Plejades. Pure Bryce 5.5, no PP except title.

Rovers Thanks everyone for the kudos. I fact I had a Sojourner at right but moved back to the earlier version because it somehow spoiled the sense of scales.

That's fantastic, almost photographic. Not tempted to include some BEM's or LGM? Oh well... 5/5

Beautiful I believe, that if you moved the volcano little aside and downward from picture center( I mean rotate the camera), it could look even better..

We and DEM We, Jesuis, is you and me and everybody looking at the picture. I could have said: the camera is looking. The resolution of 160 ft per pixel means this is still very coarse. The detail of the dunes is made my the material I used and suggests a resolution that is not here at all. Start for the DEMs used is: http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/missions/mgs/megdr.html there are lower resolution ones, also. The DEMs I actually used here can be fetched directly at: http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/geodata/mgs-m-mola-5-megdr-l3-v1/mgsl_300x/meg128/. The whole Mars in 128 pixels per degree makes 180? (90?N to 90?S) x 128 x 360? x 128 = 1 GB. Each point uses 2 bytes for the altitude, hence 2 GB.
