Looks to me like a volumetric texture like maybe the blood corpuscels? The layering/fuzzy effect works really nicely makes a pleasent change from the ultra reflective impossibly smooth surfaces that bryce lends itself to. Reminds me of a lava lamp in decopage - I agree with eagle4, weird and cool!
