Squared Mirror Sphere
I was wrong with how Caperh's ?Figuras y Luces? was made. Caperh was kind enough to disclose his method and I created another Mini-Tutorial, which is ready at my website and soon will be at David's, too. This example shows a sphere made of 500 mirroring 2D-faces, an ordinary sphere inside and a radial light that makes the pattern on the ground. This is not a piece of art, I'm just advertising the tut.

To make the squares proportional you would have to replicate the first "disc" with a scale factor in two of the three axis of the object but the ammount of scaling involved would be dependant on the number of squares and have to be calculated or guess on a case by case basis. It is a fun idea to play with, but be prepaired for slow down when dealing with so many primitives at once!
WOw, is great! It would seem like a great project to play around with. Love the light on the ground.
Whoa, Disco! I'll have to check out that mini-tut, it sounds interesting. I wonder, though, is there any way to make all of the squares equal (the ones on the sides appear to be compressed)?
