Spaceship (from Spaceagles) and hand was constructed in Wings3D. The hand was not smoothed on purpose. I found simple radial lights give a more dramatic lighting that a dome.

Thanks David. I'll take that advise. I was, in fact, too wrapped up with the hand and the bending of the fingers and later with the placing of the mirror to be properly attentive to other considerations.
My rule of thumb, which I will share at the risk of being proved wrong, modeling you want to show off skin in a matt material and light extravengantly, otherwise to "hide" your model but get a good effect and save on lights at the same time, use reflective and transmissive materials - it makes it difficult to find the edges and lends complexity where it is perhaps lacking. In this case, I cautiously suggest, the ships should be matt and generously lit while the hands are good as they are?
