Evening Sun
This came about as a sidetrack during my progression through the Robin Wood Tutorials. The colors and contrast and seem to compliment the illustration style that is attempted by the very fake sun stand in sphere. So for me it has a level of interest just slightly above the average feature test render.

The strong 3D nature of the scene seems somewhat at odds with the concept of imitating illustration style. Perhaps the addition of some postwork filtering, like the water colour effect, might help matters?
I really love backlit scenes like this. A tree, some sky, some sun, a recipe for beauty. I'm not sure what your goals are with this scene as far as the degree of realism you are after. The "sun" looked more to me like a floating glass ball a few feet away from the tree, not a distant star. I feel like the sun is behind that orb. The leaves have some transparency. I'm not sure what technique you have used but you could give my leaf template 1 a try. It will work very well in this scene. No ambient is the right starting place, now you just need to correct the shadows by adding a weak secondary light source just behind the camera in this case ti lift the shadows just a touch. I do not know of the tutorial that you speak, but it looks cool. I've have to search it out.
