Passh?he (Top of Pass)
Another study with a real photograph (taken last year from my terrace) as sky. The buildings are from Mindland Graphics, the truck and the coach I found on the web. The base for the material on the terrain was taken from one of David's (see Openair Museum) but modified it much. The scene is lit by the sun approximately at the position the sun was when the photograph was taken, supported by a radial for power. The shadows are brightened by the Rotten HDRI. Another radial was used at the camera position to light the ragged terrain structure at the lower right. The mountains in the far background are on the photograph. Rendering this scene with soft shadows, 64 rays, 256 lights for IBL took 40 hours. This picture was rendered conventionally with 16 IBL lights and AA just took 40 minutes. There is hardly any difference between the two. I will have to find out, why.

Now there is a lot of constructive comment and I thank you all for it. Gat: the light at the camera is ranged and faint, it does not reach the houses. Tina: I prefer honest critique over dishonest flattery. I may like compliments but they do not help me to improve. Rashad: Oops, I forgot to remove the ambient channel on the houses, the vehicles are clean. All: We are on the summit of a pass, the 'mountains' are supposed to be small. Though the material applied may work well in some distance when the colours blur, the 'flowers' and 'vegetation' do not look convincing at this proximity, I do agree. I must admit that I had let myself too much carried away by the sky photograph, the lighting and the fiddly bits like the houses, road and vehicles and forgot to look at the whole of the picture. I'm still experimenting with photographs to cope with the flat Bryce sky.
The clounds while good, look a little out of proportion to me, or at least out of scale to the mountains... something not quite right in that area. And while I agree with nearly eveyrthing that has been said above, I have a further suggestion to make. Try changing the aspect ratio around, make the image 3:4 and then, if it is the case, your 4:3 photo of the sky can fit comfortably into the uppper half of the image without distortion. Also... with a terrain materail that is so lumpy and bumpy I would not concern myself overly with providing softened shadows. Keep on experimenting with those sky images, I believe until something is done with the bryce sky lab, that it is the way forwards.
The above comments are right on the mark for me. The sky is so very great. The landscape is awesomely modelled but the texture is a bit too colorful for me. Your haze settings seem to blend the distant mountains into the sky very believably. Something in the lighting is not quite working for me. But then again, I'm probably just thrown off by the colorful material of the landscape. Do I sense the ambient channel at work on the vehicles and the houses?
. Wow Horo!! the clouds are awesome, the color change incredible, but the mountains have something what I don't like maybe need a little haze, anyway its a good picture, good work.
Beautiful View! Nice work Horo! You have a beautiful view. I'm jealous! Your clouds are so real, but they don't go with the rest of the scene. The landscape looks like you did an oil painting. Your clouds looks like you took a snap shot and then put the two together. I think the scene itself is altogether lovely. I hope you don't mind my critique.
. I don't think it was a good idea to add a radial light at the camera, it brightened things up a bit too much. Also, what are the blue, red and purple spots on the ground? Other then that I really like that road and the shape of the mountains, they could be a bit bigger actually.I drive way for the houses would have being nice too. Nice job.
