If they were magic mushrooms I'd be tempted to use some solarising effects and maybe incorporate a bit of brightly coloured fractal patterns along the edges of the musrooms - to make it look like they were trying to turn into something else. Soft focus is a very mild effect to my way of thinking.
Of course, now I get it. My simple mind could not keep up. All that really matters is that your intentions are being realized, even if the simple minded don't at first get it. Bravo!
Ha! That's what I thought was your intention. A bold decision to put up such a defocused picture. Actually, I don't need to eat mushrooms to have this view, it suffices to remove my glasses. Not spectacular as it is, but a bold idea.

Depth of field must be set so that there is at least one object in focus. Right now all of the objects are out of focus so it is difficult to tell what you want us to pay attention to. Odd as it seems, dof throws some things out of focus just to bring other things into focus, know what I mean. Still a nice pic.
