A conversation around the artwork

Thanks all. I feel the suggestions given are exactly what I would have expected. Horo hit the nail on the head with the artistic license taken. I could make this look more real by flattening out the clouds and the continental bumpmaps, but it would look alot less special than it does now. This one was a quickie so I probably will not go further with this one for now, but I will keep these ideas in mind for as we all know every once in a while we find ourselves in outer space above one planet or another. Thanks Spektyr for the vote!

I think this image is quite good. Both the moon and Earth are very well done and the stars, although I think they should be brighter, are fabulous! I'm giving this a 5/5. Very well done! BTW, I'm doing a new rainbow colored abstract with a spiraled meta ball construct, to be named 'Meta Vortex 1', that is proving to be a real render monster. It contains 42 meta balls and I expect the total render time will be close to 48 hours. It's been working since yesterday evening and it's not even half way done. Even the micro preview takes forever to update. LOL I'll post it when it's complete. It should be an interesting piece. :-)

. the moon to earth size ratio is wrong I think, either that or the distance is wrong :) other then that this is a very nice render of a space scene. The clouds do stand out too much and have a very dark unnatural shadow, but artistically this is great. Also, the way you can see a shadow from the continents, makes it look like there is a 20 mile cliff straight down ;)

This is a good piece of work, Rashad. I like the clouds that are definitely above the surface and the shadow they cast. This makes it very special - more a piece of art than a "photograph". Judging from the diameter, the clouds are about 80 km (50 mi) up and this is not natural. The Earth is very well focused but the moon map is blurred. The moon doesn't appear to be our moon. What is wrong with it is that the albedo is the same all over. If it is a small, round asteroid, this might still be correct. The crater rims are round but should appear razor sharp. The terminator seems a bit narrow to me, too. The moon is very nice, nevertheless and without changing it, I would move it behind the Earth so it appears smaller and the "deficits" would be less obvious. Again, a great piece of art, but not very natural. The red cloud near the lower left corner is a very nice addition and the star field very good.

Thanks. Ah yes, the clouds depth. As you note there is alot of fakery going on as the world we live in is a popular artistic subject. On the differences between real photos and this thing I posted here, I tried to consider the post processing almost all images from space usually receive long before we ever see them. I figured the reason we did not see more depth within the clouds is because most photos have their contrast levels increased greatly, turning the subtle shading of the clouds into a uniform whiteness looking very flat. I am also unsure about the distances the real photos are taken from, affecting the resolution greatly. The moon was fun and turned out better than I expected. Surely Horo will shed more light on the scenario.

It is very difficult for me to judge images of the planets, this one looks good in itself, but as is often the case when I use google to pull up a real image taken from space, I'm often suprised at the difference between what I imagnined it looked like and what the actual photos show. I suspect this is because it is something that I've seen faked so often in SF films and on TV and so rarely seen genuine photo's and never seen the real thing that the whole subject is rather ambiguous. I'm sure that Horo being an astronomer will be able to pinpoint exactly where things are going adrift, but to me it looks good, but somehow not quite right. Yup... just looked... pictures of earth from space don't look real and what's more, there is no hint of any atmospheric depth, something you do have there.
